The Great Salt Pond is a body of water within Block Island. Situated on the north end, an artificial channel was dug out in 1895 to create an opening to Block Island Sound, part of the Atlantic Ocean. This was to create a safe harbor for boats to moor as the rest of the waters surrounding the island are too rocky. Today, a number of marinas are found here.
